negative space drawings
June 19, 2007 in Art

Bob (my color and design professor) wanted us to draw “negative space” today. So he set up two stools and had us sketch them out. And this isn’t to brag or anything, but I’m awesome. Lmao. I finished up, signed it, and said, “Okay, what now?” He laughed and said, “Go outside and draw something you see out there.”

After taking this class, I see things so differently. Like, walking through the campus, I notice architecture, negative space, colors, everything. It’s all so well put together. You start to appreciate EVERY little thing that you see, y’know? I was going through a hallway, and I had to shoot this picture. I mean, it was almost too pretty to not want to remember it forever.

Here is the tree I drew. It’s about 11 inches wide — I promise you that it looks so much better in person. I know everyone says that, but I feel like so much of the energy I put into a drawing is lost when all you can see is a lame photograph of it. *Sigh*
College is awesome.
My campus is beautiful.
I’m having a good time.

For anyone interested in doing a negative space drawing, I’ll make it simple. NEGATIVE SPACE is the air between an object and around it. For instance, I’m a person, right? If you drew a picture of me, I’d be positive space. The area around me would be negative space. Basically, you’re drawing the silhouette of an object rather than the actual object itself. Give it a shot. And let me see what you come up with. ~<3
